“Cheaper to Go Up”: Beecher Schools Discuss Vertical Expansion Concepts
Beecher School Board Facilities Committee Meeting | November 24, 2025
Article Summary: Facing potential future enrollment growth and high land costs, the Beecher School Board Facilities Committee discussed conceptual plans for building second-story additions.
Expansion Key Points:
-
Vertical Strategy: Administrators advised that adding second stories to existing buildings is more cost-effective than acquiring new land and building out.
-
Junior High Concept: A preliminary concept involves adding a second floor to the Junior High’s eighth-grade wing to create six new classrooms.
-
Grade Realignment: Long-term brainstorming includes potentially moving fifth grade to the Junior High to relieve overcrowding at the Elementary School.
BEECHER, Ill. – With limited space at Beecher Elementary and high costs associated with purchasing land, the School District 200-U Facilities Committee on Monday, November 24, 2025, discussed long-term strategies that focus on building up rather than out.
During a review of the district’s building maintenance checklist, the conversation shifted to long-term facility planning. Administrators noted that if enrollment increases, the district needs a plan that doesn’t involve constructing entirely new campuses.
“It’s always cheaper to go up than to build anything,” an administrator told the committee. “If you look at wanting to build a whole new high school and whole new sports complex… we don’t have that money.”
The committee discussed a concept involving the Junior High School. By constructing a second story above the current eighth-grade wing, the district could gain six classrooms. This expansion would potentially allow the district to move fifth-grade students from the Elementary School to the Junior High, relieving pressure on the district’s oldest building.
“If you’re asking… what’s your long-term plan right here at this moment? I would move fifth grade to [the] Junior High,” the administrator said.
The committee also briefly discussed the feasibility of adding a second story to the High School science wing instead of building outward near the greenhouse. Officials emphasized that these discussions are currently conceptual and no immediate expansion projects are scheduled.
