Beecher Board of Education Meeting | April 15, 2026

The Beecher Board of Education held its regular business meeting on Wednesday, April 15, 2026. The board addressed parent complaints regarding elementary school discipline, received an update on regional vocational program challenges, and tabled the purchase of a new junior high digital sign. The board also unanimously approved the evening’s financial reports and officially hired a new elementary school principal for the upcoming academic year.

Kelly Toppen Hired as Beecher Elementary Principal: The board unanimously approved the employment of Kelly Toppen as the new Principal of Beecher Elementary School. Toppen, who attended the meeting with her family, briefly addressed the board to express her excitement. “Being in Beecher, it’s kind of a dream of mine to be able to help support the teachers that are teaching my own students,” Toppen said. “I’m extremely grateful for this opportunity.” District officials noted Toppen will immediately begin participating in the interview processes for open kindergarten and first-grade teaching positions.

Clear Residency Checks Coming Soon: Superintendent Dr. Jack Gaham announced that the district will soon run its “red flag” clear residency checks for the upcoming school year. The software uses public records to verify student addresses against an 85% accuracy threshold. Families who fall below the 85% match rate, or those who registered within the last year, will receive letters requiring them to manually prove their district residency.

High School “Zero Period” English Class Considered: Beecher High School Principal Mike Meyer reported that the administration is exploring the creation of a “zero period” English class for the next school year. The early-morning class is being considered to help absorb scheduling crunches caused by a large incoming junior class.

Student Activities and Fundraisers Excel: Building principals highlighted several successful student activities across the district. At the high school, 15 students recently traveled to the CIBC Theatre in Chicago to see a live performance of Hamilton. The National Honor Society successfully completed its “Egg My House” fundraiser on April 4, hiding 5,690 regular eggs across 68 local yards. Additionally, the Freshman Pancake Breakfast held on March 29 sold 765 tickets and served 572 plates. At the junior high, Beecher successfully hosted the Fifth Annual Beecher Solo/Ensemble Festival on March 28, featuring 50 students, four of whom won “Best of Day” awards.

Tenure Recognitions and Staffing: The board unanimously approved official tenure status for four staff members: Lindsey Berger, Julia Galgan, Matin Gianotti, and Lynette Naylor. The board also unanimously approved the hiring of Justin Bronson as a new 6th-grade math teacher for Beecher Junior High.

Financial Report Overview: The board approved the April 2026 expenses and the monthly Treasurer’s Report. The district reported total funds of $9,555,650.69 as of March 31. March receipts totaled $433,307.93 against expenditures of $1,449,724.69. The Education Fund balance currently sits at $16,184,958.17, while the Building Fund holds $1,705,554.14.

Beecher Sophomores Develop Research-Based Fitness Plans: During the Beecher Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, the high school building report highlighted a new curriculum focus in the physical education department. Mr. Shireman’s sophomore health classes are currently learning how to construct goal-oriented, research-based fitness plans. The students are learning how to incorporate major muscle groups into their routines to improve specific elements of physical fitness, while also focusing on appropriate warmups and cool-downs to prevent sports injuries and aid in recovery.
