Meeting Summary and Briefs: Beecher Community Library Board for May 20, 2025

The Beecher Community Library Board seated three newly elected trustees and appointed its officers for the next two years at its May 20 meeting. Shirley R. Biery was re-elected as board president to lead the seven-member board. For more details on the election results and new officer slate, see the full story.

In other business, the board approved a new process to allow staff to pay routine bills between meetings, a change intended to increase efficiency. Trustees also received updates on a number of summer programs and the progress of the library’s window remodeling project.

Summer Reading Program to Launch
The library is set to kick off its Summer Reading program on June 2. Library Director Jill Grosso also announced a full slate of upcoming events, including a Reptile Program on June 13, an Adult Puzzle Swap, a Murder Mystery Night, and craft sessions. Due to the summer activities, the Children’s Storytime program will be held across the street.

Window Remodeling Project Advances
The library has made a 50% down payment of $7,389.16 to Preferred Window & Door for its upcoming window remodeling project. According to a report at the meeting, project specifications are expected to be finalized by early June, with the work scheduled to begin in mid-July.

Board Approves Over $33,000 in Bills
Following a review of the Treasurer’s report and a financial recap, the library board voted unanimously to approve the payment of outstanding bills. After additions were presented, the total authorized payments amounted to $33,399.23. The board noted that the library’s budget comparison remains in good standing.

Library to Share Student ‘Acts of Kindness’
The library will partner with a Beecher Elementary student to share handmade bookmarks with patrons. The bookmarks, which feature encouraging phrases, are part of the school’s “Acts of Kindness” program. Library Director Jill Grosso agreed to review the bookmarks to ensure they are appropriate before making them available to the public.

Library Joins Chamber Banner Program
The board approved a motion to participate in the Beecher Chamber of Commerce’s street banner program. The library’s participation will come at a cost of $43.20.

Building Front Power-Washed
President Shirley R. Biery commented on the improved appearance of the library building, noting that the entire front was recently power-washed. The board also recognized John Engstrom for his “excellent work” on the project.
