Meeting Summary and Briefs: Beecher Board of Education for Jan. 7, 2026
Beecher Board of Education Meeting | Jan. 7, 2026
The Beecher Board of Education convened for a special meeting on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at the Beecher High School Library. The meeting was called to order at 5:00 p.m.
Board members present included President Ashley Belt, Secretary Brandy Flores, and Trustee Adriana Diachenko. The transcript noted the absences of members identified as Miss Woodley, Mrs. Hansen, and Dr. Hansel. The Board moved quickly through a short agenda focused on funding amendments and personnel before engaging in a detailed discussion regarding the “Press Plus 120” policy updates.
FAFSA Mandate Frustration:
During the policy review, the Board and administration expressed frustration regarding the state mandate requiring high school students to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to graduate. Discussions highlighted the difficulty of the process and the lack of an easy “opt-out” mechanism for families who do not intend to apply for financial aid. “Why would you make it a state requirement if you’re not asking for financial aid… and you’re not going to college?” Secretary Brandy Flores asked. The administration confirmed that while waivers exist, the state requirement remains strict.
Leaf Erickson Day Change:
As part of the legal updates presented in the policy review, the Board was informed that Leif Erikson Day is no longer a state-recognized holiday for school calendar purposes.
Internet Safety Instruction:
The Board discussed upcoming requirements for internet safety education. Beginning in 2027, instruction on internet safety will be required for grades 3 through 8. Board members discussed the importance of teaching social media responsibility, cyberbullying awareness, and general digital safety at age-appropriate levels, even for platforms that technically require users to be older.
