A massive structure fire late Saturday, March 28, 2026, completely engulfed a large barn on Whispering Hills Lane, killing 15 animals and requiring a multi-agency response to extinguish.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to the property at 11:56 p.m. Upon arrival, first responders found a 60-by-60-foot wood frame barn fully involved in flames. Firefighters immediately worked to contain the intense blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby exposures.

According to incident reports, no human injuries were sustained during the emergency, and crews successfully ensured that no other buildings on the property were damaged.

However, the rapid spread of the fire resulted in a tragic loss of livestock. Officials confirmed that 12 chickens and three goats perished inside the fully engulfed structure.

Due to the size and intensity of the fire, the incident required a significant mutual aid box alarm to bring in additional manpower and water resources. The multi-agency response included assistance from the Crete Fire Department, the Crete Township Fire Department, the Village of Beecher, the Village of Manhattan, and the Village of Frankfort.

Additional emergency support was rendered by neighboring fire crews from Steger Estates, University Park, Flossmoor, Matteson, and Richton Park.
