Beecher Varsity Softball Overcomes Early Deficit to Defeat Homewood-Flossmoor 7-5

The Beecher varsity softball team used a six-run surge in the middle innings to erase an early deficit and secure a 7-5 non-conference victory over Homewood-Flossmoor on Friday afternoon.

Homewood-Flossmoor jumped out to a quick lead, pushing a run across in the top of the first inning and extending their advantage with two more runs in the third. I. Thurman highlighted the Vikings’ offensive attack with a home run, while teammates Denmark Chaney, Dakota Hoekstra, and Macy Hamer all recorded multi-hit games.

However, Beecher’s bats awakened in the bottom half of the third inning. Trailing 3-0, the Bobcats got on the board with a single run before completely turning the tide in the fourth. Beecher rallied for three runs in the fourth frame to take the lead, then tacked on three more critical insurance runs in the fifth to make it 7-3.

Sophomore Maddy Grooms fueled the Beecher offense, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and an RBI. Sophomore Grace Wuest also delivered a crucial spark, picking up two hits and scoring twice. Carmela Irwin, M. Johnson, and Liliana Irwin each chipped in with timely hits and an RBI to keep the line moving.

In the circle, senior Taylor Norkus earned the complete-game victory for the Bobcats. Norkus scattered 12 hits and allowed five earned runs over seven innings, but showed exceptional control by issuing zero walks while striking out four Homewood-Flossmoor batters.

Homewood-Flossmoor threatened a late comeback with two runs in the top of the sixth, but Norkus and the Beecher defense shut the door in the final frame to seal the win. Despite taking the loss, the Vikings’ pitching staff was the victim of costly defensive miscues. Reliever I. Thurman allowed seven runs over five innings of work, but none were earned as the Homewood-Flossmoor defense committed three fielding errors on the day.
