Beecher Capitalizes on Free Passes to Overpower Kankakee 16-4

The Beecher varsity baseball team utilized exceptional plate discipline and capitalized on a flurry of early walks to secure a commanding 16-4 non-conference road victory over Kankakee on Tuesday afternoon.

Beecher’s offense was remarkably efficient, translating just seven hits into 16 runs thanks to 13 walks drawn against the Kankakee pitching staff. The visitors wasted no time seizing control, erupting for eight runs in the top of the first inning before adding a six-run surge in the second. That early 14-run cushion proved more than enough to put the five-inning, run-rule shortened contest out of reach.

Control issues plagued Kankakee from the very first pitch. Starter Jacob Vinardi and reliever Aidan Liddell struggled to find the strike zone in the opening frame, combining to allow eight runs before escaping the inning. Mike Prudejr entered in the second inning and was victimized by defensive miscues behind him; despite allowing six runs, none were earned, though he did issue five walks.

Nicholas Fox was the catalyst for the Beecher offense, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Tyler Doran made the most of his lone official at-bat, ripping a double while also drawing a pair of walks and scoring twice. Noah Hanson and Gavin Van Ness also chipped in with hits for the visitors, while Chase Maher drew a pair of walks and drove in a run.

On the mound, Easton Lane earned the victory in relief for Beecher. Lane pitched three innings, striking out five batters while allowing two hits and a single unearned run. Tyler Doran also pitched two innings, striking out three while yielding three runs.

Despite the lopsided score, Kankakee found a few bright spots. Freshman reliever Johnny Short provided much-needed stability on the mound, tossing two scoreless innings and allowing just one hit while striking out a pair. Offensively, freshman Rahman Lawal reached base three times, finishing 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored. J. Villafuerte, Colten Kearney, and Devin Arbour accounted for Kankakee’s other three hits, with Villafuerte coming off the bench to stroke a pinch-hit single and score a run.

Kankakee managed to string together late offense, pushing across two runs in the fourth inning and another in the fifth, but the early deficit was too much to overcome.
