Beecher Rallies Past Gardner-South Wilmington 9-6 Behind Van Ness’s Relief Mastery

The Beecher varsity baseball team erased a four-run deficit to secure a thrilling 9-6 comeback victory over conference host Gardner-South Wilmington on Monday afternoon. Fueled by a spectacular, extended relief performance from Gavin Van Ness and a late-inning offensive surge, Beecher flipped the script after falling behind early in the contest.

The game began as an offensive sprint. Beecher struck first with a run in the top of the first inning, but Gardner-South Wilmington (GSWHS) responded with a massive five-run eruption in the bottom of the second. The Panthers’ rally was highlighted by a two-run home run from Reed Millette and a clutch RBI double by Owen Vitko. GSWHS tacked on another run in the third inning to extend their advantage to 6-2, threatening to run away with the game.

However, the momentum completely shifted when Beecher called upon Van Ness from the bullpen in the third inning. The reliever was nothing short of brilliant, completely neutralizing the Panthers’ offense. Over five dominant innings of work, Van Ness allowed just one run on two hits while striking out 10 GSWHS batters, giving his team the stability it needed to mount a comeback.

With Van Ness dealing on the mound, Beecher’s bats came alive in the middle innings. Tyler Doran and Easton Lane provided the heavy lifting, crushing extra-base hits into the gaps. Doran finished the day 3-for-4 with two doubles, while Lane went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple. Beecher cut the deficit to 6-4 with a pair of runs in the fifth inning, setting the stage for a dramatic sixth.

In the top of the sixth inning, Beecher capitalized on GSWHS’s defensive struggles. The Panthers committed five errors on the day, and Beecher made them pay by pushing four runs across the plate—most of them unearned—to suddenly take an 8-6 lead. Beecher added a final insurance run in the seventh inning, and Van Ness slammed the door in the bottom half to secure the hard-fought 9-6 victory.

For GSWHS, starting pitcher C. Christensen pitched well despite taking a no-decision, striking out six batters over five innings while allowing just two earned runs. Offensively, Vitko and Brock Enerson each tallied two hits for the Panthers in the loss.
