Lane’s Arm, Opportunistic Offense Lead Beecher Past St. Anne, 4-1

The Beecher varsity baseball team capitalized on a stellar pitching performance and critical defensive miscues to secure a 4-1 conference victory on the road against St. Anne on Thursday afternoon.

Beecher used a combination of timely hitting and aggressive baserunning to back starting pitcher Easton Lane, who proved difficult to hit all day. Lane earned the victory after throwing 5.1 strong innings, allowing just one run on two hits while walking five and striking out nine St. Anne batters. Chasten Clegg entered the game in the sixth inning and slammed the door, retiring the final five outs without allowing a hit to pick up the save.

Beecher’s offense was efficient, generating four runs on six hits. Chase Maher anchored the middle of the lineup, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Tyler Doran made the most of his opportunities at the plate, driving in a pair of runs on a hit and a sacrifice fly. Nicholas Fox was a constant presence on the basepaths, reaching base twice, stealing a base, and scoring two runs, while Lane helped his own cause offensively by adding a pair of hits and scoring a run. D. Camilleri also crossed the plate for the visitors.

For St. Anne, defensive struggles proved costly. Starting pitcher C. Berryhill took a tough-luck loss despite a solid outing on the mound. Berryhill pitched five innings, allowing four runs on four hits, but only one of those runs was earned as the defense committed three errors behind him. Liam Goodrich provided a bright spot in relief, tossing two scoreless, hitless innings with a pair of strikeouts to keep the home team within striking distance late in the game.

Offensively, St. Anne struggled to solve the Lane-Clegg tandem, managing just two hits in the contest. Jackson Hawkins recorded the team’s lone extra-base hit with a double, while Caleb Behrends added a single. Goodrich scored St. Anne’s only run in the bottom of the third inning.

Beecher set the tone early with a run in the top of the first inning. St. Anne managed to cut into a 3-0 deficit in the bottom of the third, but Beecher responded with a final insurance run in the fifth to secure the 4-1 final.
