Massive Eight-Run Second Inning Propels Seneca Past Beecher

Spread the love

Seneca used a massive eight-run outburst in the bottom of the second inning to hold off Beecher 8-6 in a wild, defensively sloppy Friday non-conference matchup.

Despite committing six errors in the field, the Seneca varsity baseball team managed to bend without breaking. Beecher’s offense repeatedly chipped away at the deficit but ultimately fell short after a disastrous second frame proved too deep of a hole to climb out of.

Beecher struck first, pushing two runs across the plate in the opening inning to take an early lead. However, the game turned completely in the bottom of the second. Seneca capitalized on a series of defensive miscues by Beecher to hang eight runs on the scoreboard. Beecher starting pitcher Nicholas Fox bore the brunt of the damage, but only one of the eight runs he surrendered was earned, highlighting the fielding struggles that plagued his brief 1.2-inning start.

Trailing 8-2, Beecher turned to Santino Imhof out of the bullpen, and the reliever was spectacular. Imhof immediately shut down Seneca’s momentum, throwing 4.1 scoreless innings in relief. He scattered five hits, walked just one batter, and struck out five to keep Beecher firmly in the contest.

With Imhof holding the line, the Beecher offense went to work. Tyler Doran led the charge at the plate, putting together a stellar 3-for-5 performance that included a double, a run scored, and two RBIs. Gavin Van Ness also delivered a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

Beecher rallied for three runs in the top of the third inning to cut the deficit in half and added another run in the fourth on an RBI from Imhof, making it an 8-6 ballgame. However, Seneca’s pitching staff found a way to slam the door over the final three innings, navigating around their own defensive errors to secure the victory.
