Norkus Strikes Out 15, Tosses One-Hitter in Beecher’s 4-0 Victory Over Gardner-South Wilmington
Senior ace Taylor Norkus delivered a masterpiece in the circle, striking out 15 batters and tossing a complete-game one-hitter to propel the Beecher varsity softball team to a 4-0 home conference victory over Gardner-South Wilmington on Friday.
Norkus was in absolute control from the opening pitch, consistently overmatching the Gardner-South Wilmington lineup. She allowed just one hit—a single by Maddie Simms—and issued four walks over her seven innings of work. The Beecher defense played flawlessly behind her, committing zero errors to ensure the shutout remained intact.
Beecher’s offense struck early to give Norkus the only run support she would need. The hosts plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning, capitalizing on timely hitting and aggressive baserunning. Elena Kvasnicka and Maddy Grooms each successfully stole a base to keep the pressure on the opposing defense.
The game settled into a tense pitchers’ duel through the middle innings. Gardner-South Wilmington freshman B. Christensen pitched remarkably well in defeat, tossing a complete game of her own. Christensen scattered seven hits, struck out three batters, and allowed just four earned runs over seven innings, routinely working her way out of jams to keep her team within striking distance.
Beecher finally managed to manufacture crucial insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Allie Johnson, who reached base three times on the day via a hit and two walks, helped spark the late rally. Karsyn Kasput, M. Johnson, Carmela Irwin, Kvasnicka, and Mia Chavez each contributed hits to the balanced offensive effort, allowing Beecher to push two final runs across the plate to seal the 4-0 victory.
