Norkus Tosses Two-Hit Shutout, Beecher Offense Cruises Past Gardner-South Wilmington 10-0
Senior Taylor Norkus delivered a brilliant two-hit shutout to lead the Beecher varsity softball team to a 10-0 run-rule victory over conference rival Gardner-South Wilmington on Friday afternoon.
Norkus was in complete command throughout her five innings of work, shutting down the Gardner-South Wilmington lineup with precise location. She faced just 18 batters, allowing zero walks and striking out eight while throwing an incredibly efficient 54 pitches. Kayla Scheuber and Ella Mack managed the only two hits for the visitors, but Norkus routinely kept the basepaths clear to secure the complete-game shutout.
The Beecher offense was equally unrelenting, tallying 10 hits and scoring in all four of their turns at bat to trigger the run rule. They quickly established a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and relentlessly applied pressure to the Gardner-South Wilmington defense, which ultimately committed two costly errors that led to five unearned runs.
Elena Kvasnicka and M. Johnson served as the primary catalysts for the Beecher offense, each finishing with a pair of hits, a double, and two runs scored. Johnson also recorded an RBI, while Maddy Grooms provided a perfect 2-for-2 performance, scoring twice. Carmela Irwin contributed heavily as well, ripping a triple and driving in a run as part of a 1-for-2 day.
Maddie Simms started in the circle for Gardner-South Wilmington and took the loss, pitching three innings and yielding eight runs on nine hits while striking out three. Freshman B. Christensen pitched one relief inning, allowing two unearned runs on one hit.
Beecher continued to add to its advantage with a three-run second inning, another three-run frame in the third, and two final runs in the fourth to reach the 10-0 threshold and finalize the five-inning victory.
