Beecher Board Tables $16,000 Junior High Digital Sign; Approves Sealcoating and New Elementary Desks
Beecher Board of Education Meeting | April 15, 2026
Article Summary: The Beecher Board of Education approved over $17,000 in facility and equipment upgrades but delayed the purchase of a new digital sign for the junior high after questioning the necessity of the expense.
Facilities and Equipment Key Points:
-
The board tabled a proposal to purchase a new digital sign for Beecher Junior High, which would have cost the district up to $8,000 after an Education Foundation donation.
-
Pavement Maintenance Solutions was awarded a $7,181 contract to sealcoat the junior high parking lot.
-
School Outlet was awarded a $10,255.60 contract to provide 90 new desks for Beecher Elementary School.
The Beecher Board of Education on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, pumped the brakes on purchasing a new electronic message board for Beecher Junior High, choosing instead to table the item after a lengthy debate over its cost and utility.
The board reviewed two options from All-Right Signs to replace the junior high’s defunct message board. The new electronic signs were quoted at approximately $16,000 and $18,000, depending on the screen size. With the Beecher Education Foundation previously pledging $10,000 toward the project, the district would be responsible for the remaining $6,000 to $8,000.
A representative from All-Right Signs told the board that the current sign has existing 120-volt power, making the installation of the full-color, remote-accessible digital sign straightforward. However, several board members questioned whether a digital sign was still necessary, noting the district’s robust use of social media for announcements and the recent installation of large, visually appealing vinyl window graphics on the school’s facade.
“I feel like the fourth option is not to have it at all. Like, what’s our need for it besides being another thing that looks cool?” one board member asked. “When we talked about it, it was an eyesore. It was something where we were trying to visually enhance the schools, and I feel like we’ve done that so much better with the vinyl.”
The board ultimately tabled the sign purchase to allow administrators time to review the digital sign software and investigate the potential cost of simply demolishing the broken sign entirely.
While the sign project stalled, the board unanimously approved two other facility and equipment expenditures.
The board approved a bid of $7,181 from Pavement Maintenance Solutions to sealcoat the junior high school parking lot. This follows similar paving and patching work completed at the elementary and high schools last year.
Additionally, the board approved a $10,255.60 purchase from School Outlet for 90 new student desks to be deployed at Beecher Elementary School. According to district officials, the 90 desks will fully outfit three classrooms, marking the next phase in the district’s ongoing effort to cycle out older, porous wooden desks.
