Norkus Strikes Out 16 in One-Hit Masterpiece as Beecher Downs Donovan 10-1
The Beecher varsity softball team rode a dominant pitching performance by senior Taylor Norkus to a commanding 10-1 home conference victory over Donovan on Tuesday.
Norkus was nearly untouchable in the circle, overpowering the Donovan lineup from the first pitch to the last. She tossed a complete-game one-hitter, striking out an astounding 16 batters without issuing a single walk. Operating with pinpoint control, Norkus needed just 89 pitches to carve through the opposition, allowing only one unearned run in the fourth inning to finish with a flawless 0.00 earned run average for the afternoon.
While Norkus consistently shut the door on Donovan’s offense, the Beecher bats applied heavy pressure throughout the game, racking up 16 total hits. The hosts jumped out to an early advantage, plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning and adding another in the second.
After trading single runs in the fourth inning, Beecher broke the game wide open in the bottom of the sixth. The offense erupted for six runs in the frame, stringing together hits and effectively putting the contest out of reach.
Senior M. Johnson was the offensive catalyst for Beecher, scoring three times while putting together a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate. Senior Liliana Irwin also collected three hits, going 3-for-4 and scoring a run. Freshman Karsyn Kasput and sophomore Grace Wuest each delivered two hits, including a double apiece, to keep the line moving. Sophomore Maddy Grooms also chipped in a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4.
Beecher was highly aggressive on the basepaths, swiping eight stolen bases as a team to keep Donovan’s defense scrambling. Kasput and Liliana Irwin led the charge with two steals each.
For Donovan, sophomore Bailey Henneike recorded the team’s lone hit of the game to break up the no-hitter in the middle innings, but the visitors could not piece together enough momentum to overcome Norkus’s electric performance.
