Beecher Community Unit School District 200-U Meeting | May 13, 2026

The Beecher Community Unit School District 200-U Board of Education met on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at the Beecher High School library, gaveling in at 6:01 p.m. and adjourning at 7:06 p.m. The board’s most significant actions of the night were the approval of a district-wide cell phone policy, a slate of summer building projects led by a $14,276 floor restoration at Beecher Junior High School, a retirement contract for Beecher High School Principal Mike Meyer and three new teaching hires, a $93,200 Chromebook purchase, and a three-year facility agreement with Peace Lutheran Church — each covered in separate stories.

In addition to those headline items, the board acted on policy first readings, an interdistrict special education agreement, and an emergency operations plan, and heard reports on a busy end-of-year schedule across the district’s three buildings.

Executive Session Held for Personnel Matters

The board entered executive session at roughly 6:11 p.m. under 5 ILCS 120/2(c)(1), the personnel exception to the Illinois Open Meetings Act covering “the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees” and related matters. The board returned to open session at 6:40 p.m. No formal action can be taken in executive session under state law, and the board moved through several personnel-related approvals after returning to open session, including the principal retirement contract, three new teaching hires and a bus driver resignation. Members did not disclose the specific subjects discussed during the closed portion.

PressPlus 121 First Reading Approved

The board unanimously approved the first reading of PressPlus policy update 121, an Illinois Association of School Boards policy service product that bundles model policy updates for member districts. A second reading and final approval are scheduled for the board’s June 10, 2026, meeting.

SOWIC Agreement Amendment Approved

The board unanimously approved an amendment to the articles of agreement of the Southwest Cook County Cooperative Association for Special Education (SOWIC), a special education cooperative of which the district is a member. Superintendent Dr. Jack Gaham told the board the amendment is procedural, related to state funding and reporting. “It allows us to correctly allocate funds and monies within. So it gives her the authority to do so. It’s not an additional charge to any school district,” he said.

Emergency Operations Plan Approved for School Building Use

The board unanimously approved the Village of Beecher’s Emergency Operations Plan as it relates to school building usage, formally designating the district’s facilities as available for community emergency response if needed. A board member asked who would absorb the cost of any damage to a school building if it were used as a community shelter. Gaham said the district would likely file an insurance claim and that the local emergency management agency would also bear some responsibility, but he indicated additional details would be sought if such a situation ever materialized. He added that the district has long held this kind of community designation.

Clear List Residency Verification Coming May 22

Gaham told the board that the district’s annual residency verification process — the “Clear list” — will be completed and communicated to families on May 22, 2026. The district uses the Thomson Reuters CLEAR program, which compares student household data against public records and returns a match score. Households scoring 85% or higher are cleared automatically. Families not on the cleared list may have moved within the last year, may have data limitations, or may need to verify residency in person. This will be the third year the district has used the system, Gaham said.

Eighth Grade Boat Trip, Promotion and End-of-Year Trips

Beecher Junior High School Principal Dr. Michelle Kwasny told the board that the eighth grade was set to take its Navy Pier Spirit of Chicago lunch cruise on May 14, the day after the meeting. Eighth grade promotion is scheduled for Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. in the Beecher High School gym. The end-of-year trip for sixth and seventh grade students is set for Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at Brookfield Zoo.

IPA Award Winners Named

Two eighth graders were honored as the district’s Illinois Principals Association (IPA) winners this year: Faith Napierkowski and Ben Jerkatis. Staff selected the winners and the students were recognized at a breakfast hosted by the IPA, Kwasny said.

Successful Prom at the Rialto

Beecher High School Principal Mike Meyer reported that the school’s prom, held at the Rialto, went smoothly with no significant incidents. The DJ “did a fantastic job,” he said, and end-of-prom snacks of chicken nuggets and fries were provided to students as they left.

Teacher Appreciation Week Featured Food Trucks

The district celebrated Teacher Appreciation Week the week before the board meeting. Gaham said the district hired Cecil Food Truck to serve staff at each of the three buildings — Beecher Elementary on Tuesday, Beecher Junior High on Wednesday and Beecher High School on Thursday. Building-level activities, PTO support and additional staff appreciation events accompanied the central effort.

Scholarship and Booster Club Updates

The district’s scholarship committee will award 17 scholarships this year, with announcements scheduled for graduation, a member reported during committee updates. The booster club awarded a scholarship to Tegan Claus on senior night. Booster-funded improvements at the high school athletic complex included a new soccer dugout and ongoing construction of batting cages, with crews scheduled to install fencing the Friday after the meeting.

Beecher Education Foundation Activity

The Beecher Education Foundation will fund the third and final year of a three-year Freckle math subscription and has approved funding for elementary teacher Mrs. Reel’s 3D printed project, according to an update relayed at the meeting. The foundation also plans to award a $1,500 scholarship to a member of the 2026 graduating class.

Upcoming Dates

The Beecher High School graduation ceremony is scheduled for Friday, May 15, 2026, at 7 p.m. in the high school den. Beecher Junior High promotion is set for Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. in the high school den. The next regular board meeting will be held Tuesday, June 10, 2026, at 6 p.m.
