Shooting outside White House leaves one dead, one injured

Two people were shot, including the suspected gunman, in a shooting outside the White House Saturday night.

The suspected gunman was shot and killed by the U.S. Secret Service, and a bystander was injured, according to the White House.

The shooting occurred at a Secret Service checkpoint at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Ave., prompting the White House to be put on lockdown. The lockdown has since been lifted.

The Secret Service released a statement detailing the shooting, saying the officers “returned fire striking the suspect who was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased.”

The Secret Service confirmed no officers were injured in the shooting, and President Donald Trump, who was in the White House at the time of the shooting, is safe.

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that the FBI is on the scene assisting the Secret Service.
